We got the call today. I answered, and from the beginning, "Hi, this is the pediatrician. I have her results," I knew we were in for an adventure. We have known for almost 2 years that peanuts and tree nuts were out, but those are easy to avoid, especially now days. Lady H has primarily stayed at home, so that has made it even easier. Last Monday she started "3 Day 3's" preschool and my anxiety level has risen.
I teach in public schools, so I have a minute understanding of kids with allergies. I have had to post the "Peanut Free Classroom" sign on my door before. I have made sure that the "dairy free, egg free" kid has a treat for class birthday celebrations and end of the year parties. I have even had to carry the EpiPen to recess for the "bee kid".
"What happens if he gets stung?" I asked. The mother deadpanned, "he swells up like a watermelon."
However, nothing really prepared me for the results of the most current blood test. We have added dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, corn, and beef to our "list". Granted she isn't anaphylactic, thank goodness!, to all of these, they do cause painful eczema and general stomach discomfort. Thus, have begun our journey as "Allergy Parents". I know there are many blogs, websites and professionals out there, but I wanted to be another source for people who find themselves in this ever growing "club". After all, we are all in this together!
