The dairy free allergy is a hard one. Lady H LOVED her morning milk and yogurt, her milk and mac-n-cheese lunch, her cheese stick snack and her before bed milk. She also enjoyed dipping her chips into sour cream and a baked potato with cheese and sour cream. Basically if it was dairy, she devoured it!
This allergy was made even harder because of her anaphylactic tree nut allergy. That meant that most of the milk alternatives, almond, cashew and coconut milks, were out for us. We were cautious with soy for personal reasons, and then had to rule it out after her latest blood panel showed an allergy to it as well.
That left us with few options. Rice milk and Flax Milk were vehemently denied by Lady H. "It not taste!" she proclaimed and proceeded to push the cup away.
That's when I really began to research and found that goat's milk was one of our last options. After picking myself up off the Kroger floor due to sticker shock ($3.50 for 12 oz!) I decided she would just have to find a way to avoid milk, and all of its alternatives, all together. It was then, by pure chance, I noticed Meyenberg Goat Milk on a Whole Foods' shelf. I had been to Whole Foods several times but never seen this. It was mildly affordable ($4 for a quart) so I decided to give it a try.
Lady H LOVED IT! She even began to ask for it specifically. "I want more goat milk, please."
I was able to find it on Amazon.com and ThriveMarket.com in a powdered form. It is around $8-$9 for a can, but each can makes about 3 quarts. I also found that the ratios on the can are a little off for our taste. We add a little more water to get rid of the "powder taste" and that stretches the amount we can make to almost 4 quarts per can.
