Again, dairy is a hard one. Lady H loves cheese on everything! So finding something that she would eat was a challenge. You also have to be cautious because some "non-dairy" cheeses still contain casein, which many believe is what causes the allergic reaction.
Initially, after much research, I went with Go Veggie! cheese. She immediately spit it back out with the newest phrase she loves to say, "It not taste!" I tried it too and found it to have a very "oily" taste. Feeling defeated, I allowed her to have regular cheese again, promising I would cut out all other dairy products (butter, sour cream, milk, yogurt, etc.) We began to see the tell-tell signs of a reaction though, and I decided to give it one more try.
Again I took to the world wide web, immersing myself in everything non-dairy. I found the Daiya brand that promised "real cheese stretch and taste." I found it in limited flavors and forms at a few Whole Foods around us (and by "around" I mean 30 minutes or more away!) I had to go to one store for cheddar slices, another store for mozzarella shreds and cheddar shreds. A third store, even further away, promised blocks of cheese and a few other flavors of the shreds.
I got home, said a little prayer, and offered it up to the notorious cheese snob, Lady H. She took a bite and with the authority of a critic, declared "YUM! I like it!" Angels sung, I wept and she downed a cup of shredded mozzarella.
Since then, we have ventured out to other Daiya products like frozen pizza and mac-n-cheese. All of which she has devoured, demanding more!
